IN THE LOOP » Summer 2023

FISHING REPORT:

July 2023: The season can almost be described in one word: Dorado. Mahi madness has been the name of the game, and it's great to see these fish consistently in numbers and size. Arguably the most beautiful fish in the sea, dorado spawn at a high rate and are fast-growing, putting delicious and sustainable food on the table, after a heart-pounding display of underwater fireworks and an aerial acrobatic fight. Grande gallos are off to a slower start- they have been around, but are showing up more consistently along with the warm water. There have been Marlin sightings, but not seeing many brought to the boat. Billfish action was stronger early season and offshore 10-20 miles and around the east cape.

It was cool to see Tuna Fishing Company catch and release a little dinnerplate-sized halibut at Cerralvo. Also notable was the catch and release of several Totoaba by Tailhunter in La Paz. After over-fishing almost to the point of extinction (due to illegal international trade), the Totoaba has been protected since 1979. It is endemic to the Sea of Cortez, but sightings this far south are rare. You can read more about the saga of the Totoaba (and the Vaquita) here, and if you join one of our hosted trips, you'll get to try some locally farm-raised totaba (which actually resembles halibut in taste and texture!).

UP NEXT...

The mountains are green and dusted with the white cloudbursts of native plumeria tree (Cacaloxuchitl) blooms. Mangos are falling and fermenting at our feet. The micheladas are cold and the water is hot. El Verano is upon us like a heavy wool blanket and we have found ourselves unexpectedly content to melt into the helpless hum of the heat.

As always, thank you for your support and for being part of this community.
